Spacebar CPS Test

How many times per second can you press the space bar? Click the black box once so it has keyboard focus, then tap Space as fast as you can. The timer starts on your first press.

Only Space key presses count; holding the key down counts once. Average CPS is total clicks ÷ test length; Live CPS is the rate over the last second, and it drives the heat colour. Your best score for each length is saved in this browser on this device, and nowhere else.

How to take the test

  1. Choose a length: 1, 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds.
  2. Click the black box once so it has keyboard focus, then press the Space bar. Your first press starts the timer.
  3. Keep tapping Space until time runs out. Holding the key counts once.
  4. Your score is total presses divided by the length of the test.

What is a good spacebar CPS?

Most people tap a key a little slower than they click a mouse, so a lower number than on the mouse CPS test is normal. As on every length, the longer the test, the lower the average. Use the bands below as a loose guide.

Rough guide for a 10-second test. Not an official benchmark.
ScoreWhat it usually means
Under 4 CPSRelaxed, casual clicking
4 – 6 CPSTypical for most people
6 – 8 CPSAbove average
8 – 10 CPSFast, usually practiced
10+ CPSVery fast, usually jitter or butterfly technique

The heat bar uses the same colours at every length: blue is cold (under 3 CPS), then warm, fast, blazing and finally red-hot inferno at 13 CPS and above.

Why people test the spacebar

Some games and clicker-style browser games ask for rapid key presses, and many players want a spacebar counter to see how they compare. Your keyboard matters more here than on a mouse test: key travel, spring weight and how quickly the switch resets all change what you can reach.

Frequently asked questions

Does a higher CPS make me better at games?

Only in games where raw click rate matters, such as some clicker and combat games. In most games, aim, tracking and timing matter far more than clicks per second.

Why is my score higher on shorter tests?

A short test is a sprint. Over longer tests your hand tires and your rate drops, so the same person usually scores lower on 30 and 60 seconds than on 1 or 5.

Do mouse clicks count here?

No. Only the Space key counts. Clicking the black box just gives it keyboard focus. For mouse speed use the CPS test.

Does holding the Space bar count?

No. Holding a key makes your computer repeat it, and those repeats are ignored. Each separate press counts once.

Why is my spacebar score lower than my click score?

Most people click faster with a finger than they tap a key, and a key has to travel and spring back. Some keyboards also add a short debounce delay that ignores very quick repeats, so the keyboard itself can cap your score.

Is my best score saved?

Yes. Your best for each length is stored in this browser on this device, and nowhere else. Clearing your browser data removes it.

How this test works

The timer starts on your first Space press and runs for the length you picked. Presses are timed with the browser's high-resolution event timestamps, and any press after time is up is not counted. Key repeat (holding the key down) is ignored, so each physical press counts once. Average CPS is total presses divided by test length. Key presses made by scripts rather than a real keyboard are ignored.
