How to test your mouse
- Move the pointer into the black box.
- Press the left, right and middle (wheel) buttons in turn. Each one lights up while it is held.
- Press the side buttons, if your mouse has them. They are usually Back and Forward.
- Roll the wheel up, then down. When all seven inputs show Working, the badge turns green.
What the test shows
The test records the button the browser reports for each press, plus the direction of each wheel step. It cannot see the physical mouse itself, only what reaches the page, so it also reveals problems from drivers and mouse software.
| Button | Browser code | Usually |
|---|---|---|
| Left | 0 | Primary click (LMB, M1) |
| Middle | 1 | Wheel press (MMB, M3) |
| Right | 2 | Context menu (RMB, M2) |
| Back | 3 | Side button (M4) |
| Forward | 4 | Side button (M5) |
If a button does not register
- Check your mouse software. Tools from Logitech, Razer, Corsair and others can remap buttons to keyboard shortcuts or macros, so the browser never sees a click.
- Try another USB port or the receiver on a short cable. A wireless mouse with a low battery or a weak signal can drop presses.
- Clean around the button. Dust and grit under a button can stop it pressing cleanly.
- Test on another computer. If the button still fails, the mouse is the likely cause; if it works, look at settings and drivers.
Clicks that register twice are a different fault. Check for them with the double-click test, and for a wheel that skips or reverses use the scroll wheel test.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my side button not light up?
Most often your mouse software has remapped it, or your operating system has taken it over for something such as Back or a game profile. Check the mouse software, or try the button with its remap switched off.
Can this test a trackpad?
It shows the clicks and scrolling your trackpad sends, but trackpads have no middle or side buttons, so those inputs will stay untested.
Does this test my mouse sensor or cursor accuracy?
No. It checks buttons and the wheel. To see how often your mouse reports its position, use the polling rate test.
Is anything I do here sent to a server?
No. Everything is processed in your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored.
How this test works
The page listens for the browser's mouse events inside the box: a button press is recorded from mousedown and shown as lit until mouseup, and each wheel event is counted as up or down from the sign of its vertical movement. The right-click menu, middle-click scrolling and Back and Forward navigation are switched off inside the box so they do not interrupt the test. If your browser still navigates when you press a side button, the setting that triggers it lives in the browser or your mouse software.
